Dalgety
Tiny township which was once considered as a possible national capital
Dalgety is located on the Snowy River some 51 km from Cooma, 452 km from Sydney and 760 metres above sea level. It was originally known as Buckleyıs Crossing (hence the name of the townıs solitary hotel) as Edward Buckley had moved into the area as early as 1832. The name of the town was changed to Barnes Crossing when a man named Barnes moved into the area in 1848. It was, at the time, the only safe crossing of the Snowy River. By 1864, in the wake of the gold rushes, the town had a population of 23 and a punt was operating across the river. The town was surveyed in 1874 and officially named Dalgety after the maiden name of the wife of the surveyor (one way to ensure immortality for your wife).

It was suggested as the site of a possible national capital in 1904 but was passed over in favour of Canberra. Today it is a very tiny settlement with probably no more than 40 or 50 houses. There's a bridge which dates from 1888, a pub 'Buckleys Crossing Hotel' and the old 'Dalgety House'. The town is surrounded by strange granite outcrops which give the area a very cold, glaciated feel.

In autumn the town is particularly attractive with the willows and poplars along the river giving it a golden hue. The agriculture in the area includes sheep, cattle, angora goats and even a llama farm.

Things to see:   [Top of page]

Dalgety House
The oldest house in the village, Dalgety House (located opposite the turnoff to Bombala), was for many years, deserted but has now been restored.

Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church
Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church was erected in 1878 on the top of the hill overlooking Dalgety and the view from its grounds explains why this little settlement was once thought a likely site for the national capital. Its setting beside the river with the undulating cold plains rising to the nearby mountains is particularly beautiful.
