A gold mine at Hill End near Hargraves

Historic goldmining town
Hargraves is a sleepy little rural village of about 30 people, located 35 km south-west of Mudgee on the Hill End Rd and 300 km north-west of Sydney.

Hargraves was the site of the earliest goldrush in the area. In June of 1851 'Kerr's Hundredweight' was discovered by an Aboriginal shepherd on Dr Kerr's 'Hargraves' station. It consisted of three gold specimens side-by-side weighing 48 kg. The largest stone (34 kg) contained 27 kg of gold. It had to be cut into numerous pieces before it could be transferred to Bathurst.

This find led to a flood of prospectors on to the Turon River goldfield, the earliest important field in NSW. Flat reef and saddle reef mines kept the town busy until the new riches of Hill End proved too much of an attraction in the early 1870s.

Unfortunately, little remains of the fields or the town today, other than the old courthouse, police station and school.

Fossicking Area
There are some public fossicking areas around Hargraves. The best way to locate them is to enquire at what is really the only business in town - the general store and post office where gold pans can be bought or hired, demonstrations provided and panning tours organised, tel: (02) 6373 8540.

 

Historic Buildings
The town's courthouse and police station date from around the 1870s. There is an old, decrepit wooden schoolhouse a kilometre out of town which locals believe was the first National School to be established west of the Blue Mountains (directions can be obtained at the general store).
