Maude
Tiny township on the banks of the Murray River
Maude is a tiny settlement 780 km south-west of Sydney via
the Great Western and Mid Western Highways. It is 52 km west
of Hay along a bitumen road which will take you past market
gardens and the Four Mile Reserve where the river red gums
make an ideal spot for a picnic or even an overnight
camp-out.
South of the village is the Yang Yang Reserve around the
banks of the Murrumbidgee River. It was at this reserve that
a survey was conducted by F.P. McCabe in 1849. A hotel was
in existence beside a river ford by the late 1850s and a
township was set out in the mid-1860s. The proposed name of
Pimpaympa was rejected, the executive council choosing Maude
for reasons unknown.
Today Maude consists of a nondescript pub, half a dozen
old houses and a general store for refreshments and fishing
tackle.

Picnics and fishing near Maude Weir
Maude possess a beautiful shady picnic spot with barbecue
facilities at the Maude Weir, created in 1939-40. It is so
green and so cool with well-kept lawns - an oasis on the
flat plains of the Riverina. Indeed, so flat are they that
the weir, even though it lies 1530 km from the mouth of the
Murray, is only 76.44 m above sea level, which means that,
on average the land rises just 5 cm per kilometre over that
distance. The dam was completed in 1940 as part of the
Murrumbidgee Irrigation Authority.
There is a skeleton of a large boat just below the bridge
at Maude where wildlife is plentiful and there are camping
sites with toilets and barbeque facilities. Anglers will
find yellow belly, redfin and Murray cod in the waterways.
